Duties of the County Clerk:
Serves as the Auditor-Controller and Clerk-Recorder for the county
Files birth and death certificates
Files marriage licenses
Files deeds, liens, and other documents relating to property
Files military discharge records
Provides notary bonds and oath services
Files fictitious business name statements
Processes and transfers taxes
Files environmental impact reports
Performs marriage ceremonies
Documents all records and makes them easily accessible to the public
Oversees the online record and document search services
Provides forms and fees needed to file official documents
Processes and accepts fees associated with filing documents
RECORDS SEARCH AND PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST
Public records are made available by the Clerk of Court and the County Clerk.
A search can be made on the Contra Costa Clerk’s webpage. Recorded documents may be researched and requested online from 1986 to present. Documents recorded prior to 1986 can be viewed in the index by using the “Old Book” option, but for copies, a request must be made by mail, or in person.
