The Clerk of Court is the official record keeper of the courthouse. The clerk is responsible for filing judicial papers with the court, collecting filing fees, overseeing courtrooms and court schedules, making the local court rules known, and assisting with finding pro-bono lawyers.

The Clerk of Court does not only oversee criminal cases, the clerk is responsible for assisting with civil courts, small claims courts, family law, such as divorces and child custody, probate courts, traffic courts, and other collaborative courts, such as drug court, family treatment court, reentry court, and Veterans treatment court.

The Clerk of Court is an elected official who is a servant to the public.

RECORDS SEARCH AND PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST

Public records are made available by the Clerk of Court and the County Clerk.

A search can be made on the Contra Costa Clerk’s webpage. Recorded documents may be researched and requested online from 1986 to present. Documents recorded prior to 1986 can be viewed in the index by using the “Old Book” option, but for copies, a request must be made by mail, or in person.
