ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA CLERK OF COURT OFFICE

The Clerk of Court is the official record keeper of the courthouse. The clerk is responsible for processing criminal complaints filed by the District Attorney, City Attorney, or other prosecuting agency, assisting the public on criminal matters, scheduling court appearances, processing criminal related documents, such as requests for modifications of sentences, conducting record searches and processing certified copy requests, processing appeals, ,and making the local court rules known.

The Clerk of Court does not only oversee criminal cases, the clerk is responsible for assisting with civil courts, small claims courts, family law, such as divorces and child custody, probate courts, traffic courts, and other collaborative courts, such as drug court, family treatment court, reentry court, and Veterans treatment court.

The Clerk of Court is an elected official who is there to serve the public.

Duties of the County Clerk:

Acts as the Accessor, Recorder, and County Clerk for the county

Issues marriage licenses and performs marriage ceremonies

Accepts and indexes Fictitious Business Name statement filings

Files notary bonds, commissions and oaths certificates

Posts certain environmental documents, and maintains a list of public rosters

Files property records, such as deeds and liens

Issues ID cards to Professional Photocopiers, Unlawful Detainers, Legal Document Assistants and Process Servers

RECORDS SEARCH AND PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST

Public records are made available by the Orange County Clerk-Recorder’s Office and the Orange County Superior Courts. Records filed in the clerk’s office can be searched online using their database. Records can be searched by the name on the document, the document number, or the date range that the record was filed.

The Orange County Superior Courts offers the public online case access to judicial records. Civil, criminal, family, probate, and small claims cases can be viewed online.
