Every county has a clerk of court for their circuit courts. The clerk of court is an elected official who serves a 6 year term. The clerk is responsible for filing and maintaining all records pertaining to the judicial court. In addition to overseeing official court records, the clerk is responsible for attending juries in the courtroom. The clerk handpicks members of the jury and confirms oaths and affirmations. The clerk is considered a highly respected member of the judicial system.

Duties of the County Clerk:

Registers birth and death certificates for the county

Issues marriage licenses and performs marriage ceremonies

Files voter registrations and oversees county elections

Records and indexes and records pertaining to land, such as deeds, mortgages, mortgage releases, and assignments

Files vehicle and boat registrations and renewals, processes applications for car and boat titles,vehicle transfers, and provides permits and tags for motor vehicles

Collects delinquent taxes for the county and prepares and prints property tax bills

Records wills and powers of attorneys

Records filed with the clerk’s office can be searched online using the clerk’s database. Deeds, mortgages, wills, articles of incorporation, marriages, fixture filings, oil and gas leases, and other miscellaneous records can be searched online. Records can be searched using the individual’s name on the document, the date the document was recorded, or the book and page number.
